John de Lancie is an American actor. He is known for playing Q in the Star Trek franchise, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard; and for his roles in the mini-series Captains and the Kings, and on the shows Days of Our Lives, Stargate SG-1, Breaking Bad, Torchwood, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the latter in voice performance. He is also an activist for secularism.
John is the son of Andrée and John de Lancie (John Sherwood de Lancie), an oboist and arts administrator, who was principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, for 23 years, and director of the Curtis Institute of Music. His father had English and Italian/Swiss-Italian ancestry. His mother was French, born in Paris. John is married to actress Marnie Mosiman, with whom he has two children, including actor and diplomatic service worker Keegan de Lancie.
John’s paternal grandfather was Harry Sherwood DeLancie (the son of Richard Delancie and Martha Adaline/Adeline Sherwood). Harry was born in Orville, Butte, California. Richard was born in County Durwood, England, the son of John Delancie and Elizabeth Penman. Martha was was born in Ohio, the daughter of Ebenezer Eben Sherwood and Eliza Jane Crum.
