Rebecca Sugar is an American animator, composer, director, and screenwriter. She is known for her work on Adventure Time and Steven Universe. She is the first non-binary person to independently create a series for Cartoon Network, Steven Universe. Her brother, Steven Sugar, was the background artist for the show.

Rebecca was raised Jewish, and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony. She is married to animator, voice actor, storyboard artist, writer, director, and producer Ian Jones-Quartey.

Rebecca’s paternal grandfather was Marvin H. Sugar (the son of Louis Sugar and Tilly/Tillie Newman). Marvin was born in Washington, D.C., to a Russian Jewish father and a Polish Jewish mother.
